Nigel's Story
7/22/03
Poor Nigel was placed with his forever home only this weekend. When they were
feeding him, they noticed that he had some blood coming out of his nose. I had
forgotten, but his foster mom had mentioned that Nigel had had a nosebleed, but
she thought he probably got scratched by the cat.
Bill and Corrine took Nigel to the vet and it turns out that Nigel is very anemic.
The vet suspects a severe infestation of hookworm, which is treatable. So,
oddly, everyone hope for that because other causes could be harder to treat.
All of the dogs were wormed by the Humane Society before they were released to
rescue. Nigel has been fostered separately from the rest and I am hoping that
he picked up the hookworm during that time (if that is what it is). Just to
be safe, I collected samples from Leslie, Charlie, Blackie, Nina & Grace today
and delivered them to the vet (the receptionist was thrilled ... "yesterday
someone delivered cookies," she said).

Nigel has tick fever. This is probably something he has had for a long time
and the stress of all the moves he went through, plus the neuter surgery,
caused it to flare up. I did test for it, but there are something like 7-10
kinds of Ehrlichia, all of which can infect a dog -- the titre tests for
three kinds. The titre also gives a certain percent of false negatives.
I offered to take Nigel back, but Bill and Corrine said "no way!" They are
already in love with the little guy and will do whatever is necessary to
bring him back to good health.

Nigel is a wonderful pet and we're very happy to have
received him. He is just adorable and lovable, and we couldn't be happier.
O'Reilly is the perfect "big" brother and they just love each other.

Just a little update on our newest family member, Nigel. He has been on
medicine for the Hookworm (yes, he had that too), and will visit the vet in
a month to see if it's cleared up. Also, he will be on antibiotics for the
tick fever for several weeks. But the vet said he should be fine. He
really has perked up and has become very playful with O'Reilly. They've
become best buddies. Bill and I walk them daily, and Nigel keeps right up
with us. He is adjusting wonderfully, and we could not have asked for a
more sweet and affectionate dog. Thank you again for the wonderful work you
do for airedales. We're so glad to have found out about you and received a
precious new pet. Talk to you later.....................

Rose
was invited to Sit! Stay! Play! for a Halloween Party
and I was invited as her date.
Grace,
Nigel and O'Reilly were also in attendance and had
a nice Airedale get-together.
Nigel is apparently a real mamma's boy, but is still nervous around Bill.
I feel so bad for Bill, who is the nicest man, but he is patient and says that he will just
let Nigel make progress at his own pace.

Sidney, both are doing well and Nigel seems to be having a blast with life in general.
His very favorite activity is our morning and evening walks in the desert down the street.
Both dogs get along very well. Bill and Corrine

Nigel continues to SLOWLY improve with Bill and has truly become a member of
this family. He is a great watchdog and loves his " Big Brother" O'reilly!

I have been taking Rose to Sit! Stay! Play! to let her burn off some energy since Jack & Riley are more interested
in hunting than in playing with her and current FosterDale,
Sara,
is still in her leg brace.
Sit! Stay! Play! has a webcam and I was able to watch Rose and Nigel and Grace romping around together. The three Airedales were delighted
to see each other.

He and O'Reilly are the best of buds. We really love Nigel and I think he's pretty happy with us, too!
From the almost daily Frosty Paws treats, to the every morning and nite walks, he is just a bubbly little
fellow, especially in the morning. He and O'Reilly also do a little wrestling, which "dad" likes, but "mom"
tries to deter. I'm always afraid someone will get hurt. But they're just having fun. We will be bringing them to Sit, Stay and Play this week on Thursday. Hope to see you soon.
