Maggie's Story

Click here to read the background on the rescue of 19 Airedales from a puppymill.

Kathie McIndoe owns a kennel in Phoenix and frequently helps Melissa by boarding Airedales awaiting new homes. She took in 8 of the Arizona 19, one of which was Maggie.

Maggie is about 5 years old. She was wearing a collar, was socialized and was adopted by a client of Kathie's who had been waiting for an Airedale.

Maggie is doing great. Minus: I brought her into the house immediately and so far, I have lost about 5 pairs of shoes (of course, not 5 pairs but one of each pair), misc. plastic items, and I have to tie the metal (supposedly dog-proof ) garbage can to the kitchen table. The worst was when she got a hold of a plastic bottle of Crisco. The carpet now smells terrible, but this one was my fault. Plus: I love her - she is the sweetest dog and follows me from room to room. She is learning and now we play the game when I get home from work of going through the house and she takes great pride in the fact she has not destroyed anything. She is house trained (or has adapted quickly) and makes it through the day. She gets along really well with my other airedale, Indy. She pushes him out of the way to go outside, but has learned to wait her turn for treats. She knows now she has a new home and has settled in well. She managed to get out the front door one day when I came home from work. She literally bolted through a small space of a few inches between the door and me. Panic time, couldn't run her down, a neighbor got her vehicle out to get her, and the neighborhood was in chase. She turned around, run past all of us and went by herself to my side gate and waited for me. (Prayer answered!!!!)

I am very happy I adopted Maggie. She is pure love and in her way, says thank you everyday (she loves to give kisses). She is so cute to watch when she is happy as she wags her tail so hard, her little rear end actually swings from side to side. She also protects her yard now, along with her trusty companion.

I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Maggie today. I took my current foster, Atlas, up to Phoenix for a session with Airedale owner & trainer, Fran Peck. Fran is kind enough to invite any and all Airedale owners out every weekend she is training for some light training and socialization. It is a lot of fun and is a huge help for those with newly-adopted family members.

I was surprised to find that Maggie is an all red Airedale. She is gorgeous and I would bet that she is the mother of Grace, Lilly & Charlie and probably also of Ginger and Sissy (I haven't met them in person). She has a perfect head, is standard sized and has just a slightly long body. Audrey and her vet think she is probably only 2-3 rather than the 4-5 first estimated, but she was probably bred every heat from her first until she was abandoned. Because of multiple litters, and age, and the fact that she loves her meals, she has a little thicker body, but you can see she probably looked exactly like Lilly and Grace when she was their age (which I keep revising downward).

She is a very happy, friendly dog -- she LOVED the little girls who were out with the group. Here is a picture of Maggie with Audrey and Indy. Sidney
