Message from Augie
Hi,
My name is Augie and I'm a rescue! Do I look familiar? Let me tell you a little of my story. About 3 years ago I
was running loose by the Michigan/Ohio border. I don't really remember much
but people were not very nice to me and so I was afraid of them. The ACO
tried and tried to catch me but I wouldn't come near him. Finally he put
out something called a live trap and it had some really good smelling food
it in so I went in. Next thing I know I'm being put in a truck and taken to
a shelter. The shelter staff gave me shots and started picking the ticks
off of me (they stopped counting at 75). And even though I was scared to
death, I never growled or gave anybody any mean looks. The manager at the
shelter thought I looked like a black airedale and so called my mom (she
volunteers with the shelter). Mom came and and said that yep she was sure I
was part airedale and she would see if rescue would help. The nice people
at ATRA put me on their website and would do what they could but they didn't
have a foster home right now that would take a mix. Mom was really worried
because she knew that black dogs don't get adopted very often from shelters,
plus I was afraid of people, so wouldn't come to the front of the kennel to
strut my stuff, and I was over 40 pounds, and lots of people like little
dogs but not us bigger ones. After a few weeks mom got a phone call from
the shelter manager saying that ACO was bringing in 8 new dogs that day and
she needed to know if rescue could take me or she was going to have to put
me to sleep. I sleep every night, so didn't understand what everyone was so
upset about. Mom said she thought that it wasn't fair that I hadn't had a
chance to be a dog, so said she would foster me. She failed fostering, (I
think you might understand that) as I live here now with my brothers Keeper,
the big boss black and tan, and Sam, another black mix. She says I am the
most loving dog she has ever had. Anyway, back to my reason for writing.
I'm still afraid of new people, but love mymom to pieces and will give her kisses and hugs
(did I tell you I can hug?) whenever she asks. I heard about the Arizona 19 and
that some of them looked like me! I also heard that some wonderful people are helping
ones that look like me in addition to the black and tans. From us mixes that sometimes
don't get the chance we deserve, I just want to say thank you and to let you know
that my mom and I appreciate all you do.
Thank you.
Augie Cunningham
