AIREDALE RESCUE

Pictures to Assist in Identifying Rescue Airedales

Sometimes it's hard to tell you are looking at an Airedale. You might think it is a sheep -- or a large mouse! Airedales are not always Black and Tan. Sometimes they are almost all black or almost all tan. Sometimes the tan is blonde and sometimes it's red. The show standard for Airedales is about 23 inches and 55 lbs., but Airedales come in all sizes -- from quite small to very large -- and so do their tails -- from very short to very long.

If you spot a dog at a shelter that looks anything like these pictures, please e-mail me immediately at Sidney@AiredaleTerriers.org Please give as much information as possible about the location of the dog: name of shelter, address, city, state, telephone number. If you saw it on another website, please give me the URL. Thanks!

If you see a dog that looks like a minature Airedale, it may be one of these breeds:

Welsh Terrier
approx, 14–16 inches at the shoulder
weigh between 18 and 25 lbs.
Lakeland Terrier
approx. 13 1/2 inches
weigh approx. 17 lbs

Many people (especially on eBay) confuse the Wire Fox Terrier with the Airedale. An Airedale might have a little white hair on its toes or chest, but it is predominantly black and tan. This is a picture of a Wire Fox Terrier in show trim.

This page was created to help my fellow volunteers at FOUND! identify Airedales when they are photographing the dogs at the Pima Animal Control Center in Arizona. If you are interested in adopting an Airedale terrier or if you hear of an Airedale needing Rescue help, or if you are interested in helping with Airedale rescue, please contact your closest Rescue Volunteer.

Thank you to Angie Halvorson, Mary Gade, Barbara Osgood, Kanako Ohara and Lisa Selmon for permission to use photos of Juice, Dolly, Chewy, Trooper, Teddy, Ian & Sasse.
