WEEK OF THE AIREDALE
March 29 - April 5, 2003
St. Louis, Missouri

Eight days of events -- conformation, obedience, agility, hunt tests, workshops, seminars, clinics, a Parade of Rescue Airedales. Hundreds of Airedale enthusiasts from all over the world gathered for this unique event.

It is fitting that the quilt raffled during the Week of the Airedale features Airedales enjoying themselves in all seasons of the year.

The quilt is approximately 66" wide by 88" long. Quilt blocks are laid out in four quadrants displaying Airedales enjoying life in the four seasons. The quilt is intended to be a tribute to our beloved Airedales in all seasons. Many of the dogs who provided the inspiration for the blocks are rescue dogs. The center medallion depicts an Airedale puppy who has come through hard times and is "Home at Last." We wanted to convey that every dog deserves a snug haven, a soft bed, and the opportunity to be cherished by someone. We also wanted to profile some of the joy that comes back to us.

The center medallion was designed and constructed by Christie Williams from Indiana. Other quilters are Carol Elsworth, Linda Cunningham, Pat Houk and Chris Zane from Michigan; Gena Welch Booher and Evie Fieseler from Florida; Helen Arnold, Stephanie Coulshaw and Pascale Black from Canada; Sue Senerchia and Eileen Tedesco from Connecticut; Julie Mellecker and Linda Bell from Iowa; Lori Taylor from Pennsylvania; Judy Dwiggins from Oregon, Debbie Kane from Nevada, Sue Trandem from California, and Karen Brown from New York.

The top was assembled by Carolyn Finlayson and by Karen Brown, who also printed the tickets and coordinated the project. Award winning quilter Chris Zane did the quilting. Click here to see pictures of Chris hard at work on the Home at Last quilt under the supervision of her Airedales, Ben and Maddie. Stephanie Coulshaw kept us all organized and on course, provided all the virtual pictures of our quilts and generated the bios on all of the quilters. Linda Cunningham was in charge of ticket sales.

Bonus prizes were a basket full of Airedale goodies for you , including a "Woolie-'Dale" by Carol Usher modeled after the puppy in the center medallion sleeping on his own quilt made by Linda Cunningham, and an Airedale-sized soft-sided crate donated by Christine Sheffer, which will be stuffed with goodies for your Airedale. WHERE DO THE FUNDS GO?

All funds raised by this quilt are going directly to the ATCA Rescue & Adoption Committee Treasury. All funds in the ATCA Rescue & Adoption Committee Treasury are used solely to assist in rescuing and rehoming purebred Airedale Terriers by reimbursing rescue volunteers for approved expenses incurred when local funds are not sufficient. Typical costs include the cost of veterinary evaluation, including testing for heartworm and, in some parts of the country where it is common, Valley Fever or Tick Fever, spay/neuter and bringing the dog current on vaccinations. If a shelter does not cooperate with rescue, or if a dog must be commercially kenneled for a medical reason or because of a lack of foster homes, the costs can rise dramatically. Volunteers donate the cost of gas, food, telephone calls, and, of course, their time, and always request free or discounted services on behalf of rescue dogs, but the average cost for a dog rescued from a shelter is $250.00. While a donation is always requested, it may not cover the costs if any unusual circumstances arise. Your support through the purchase of tickets is vital to our continued ability to help Airedales in need.
