Housebreaking from Showdog Magazine
Crates are primarily used for house breaking puppies. But may also be used to
train/re-train adult
dogs as well. Crates are not cruel by any stretch of the imagination. It's like
an indoor den for your
companion. We "crate" our children by using cribs and playpens because we love
them and want to keep THEM safe from harm and out of trouble. It is an
excellent tool to use until you have trained your dog.

Settle
One of the most useful commands to teach your new puppy is "settle."
Settle is usually a more informal command than down. Down
means down now and don't move until I tell you. Settle means
I can't pay attention to you now, go and relax for a while.

Bite Inhibition
by Barb McNinch
A good thing to remember is that using violence to train a puppy to inhibit
its bite, will not be as successful as many might think--Violence begets
violence. Instead, the training must be consistent and calm and CONTINUED until
the puppy is mature. Puppies are not more mature at 6 months--simply older! To
begin bite inhibition, you must make sure that eveyone who comes in contact
with the puppy is following the same rules. If one member of the family is
encouraging biting, there will be a lot of confusion for the puppy.

What to Do about Puppy Nipping
From Dumb Friends League
When puppies play with each other, they use their mouths. Therefore, puppies
usually want to bite or "mouth" hands during play or when
being petted. With puppies, this is rarely aggressive behavior in which
the intent is to do harm. Because puppies are highly motivated to
exhibit this type of behavior, attempts to suppress it or stop it are
unlikely to be successful unless you give your puppy an alternative
behavior. The goals of working with this normal puppy behavior are to
redirect your puppy's desire to put something in her mouth onto
acceptable chew toys and to teach her to be gentle when a hand is in her
mouth.

For Breeders -- Developing High Achievers
In many animal-breeding programs
the entire process of selection and management is founded on the belief that
performance is inherited. However, there is credible evidence that a large
percentage of performance is actually controlled by other influences, such as
training, management and nutrition. Researchers have studied this phenomena and
have looked for new ways to
stimulate individuals in order to improve their natural abilities. Some of the
methods discovered have produced life long lasting effects. Today, many of the
differences between individuals can now be explained by the use of early
stimulation methods.

The Reality of Breeding Dogs
This site provides you with some information directly related to breeding dogs.
It also contains information directly related to things you need to know before
you breed, events that can happen as a
consequence of breeding, and even includes a section on what items (as
recommended by some very
experienced breeders) you should have on hand during birth and afterwards, so
that you can be best prepared.

Free or Low Cost Neuter/Spay Resources
NeuterSpay.org provides an up to date searchable database of USA Nationwide low cost or free
spay & neuter resources for pets and feral cats. You may search by city, state, zipcode,
county or area code and choose to find resources for pets or feral cats. You will find there
are many new listings not found elsewhere, and that many older listings listed elsewhere are
not listed as we have checked and found that those resources are defunct. Even though our
focus is cats, we've now added low cost and free dog spay and neuter information, too, as
available - though there are far fewer such resources than those available for cats,
they are increasing in number. Also has
resources in Canada and Europe.

A Pup in the House by Elizabeth Cusulas
Each pup is a new learning experience. Non-dog-owned friends are always
remarking that each of our dogs is so "different", so "individual". Well of
course they are. It's a clever survival strategy. If every dog was the same,
we'd know what to expect and WE would rule the world! But, this is not the
case. In the early days, though, there is a recurring theme: Eat, Drink, Pee,
Poop, Chew. When you have a pup in your house, these are the words you live by.

All Purpose Cure
Okay, let's be serious, there's no such thing as an all purpose cure. Each dog
and their particular behavior problem is unique. However, there are some
similarities that come up often enough we thought it made sense to repeat them
here. You might try these before you begin any other behavior modification.

Being a Puppy Parent
Raising a little puppy correctly is not difficult but does require some
attention and dedication. Enjoy your young puppy, teach it positively by
rewarding every good behavior, prevent unwanted behaviors. Do not punish,
because there is no reason to punish. You see, occasionally puppies and dogs do
things we do not like, but they do NOT do those things to be defiant to the
owners or to be naughty. And that's why I suggest very strongly: do not punish.

Housebreaking Your Puppy from the KidsandDogs Website
Most puppies are too young to be held responsible for their bladder and bowel
habits. A pup will go to the bathroom in the right place sometimes. That may be
because she learns fast and is smart, or it may be an accident that was just
lucky. It is your job to create opportunities for your pup to be successful and
to go in the correct place, outside. Be patient and try to understand your
young dog. Dogs don't do things wrong on purpose.

Purchase a doggie door and install it. Then block off a crate-sized area in
your house that is adjacent to the doggie door. This is a very easy way to

or "Outside Dog" to learn to live in the house and behave himself.

Training Tips for "Good Dogs" by Janet Smith of Good Dog! Training
There are three essential principles to responsible dog ownership:
Relationship, management and training. All are equally important for a "Good
Dog"...neglect any of the areas of responsible dog ownership and
behavior/health problems will result. Training using humane methods teaches an
animal to modify his natural behavior in order to succeed in an unnatural
environment-your home. Management involves attending to the physical and
psychological needs of the dog-food, shelter, play, exercise,
