Liver Disease
By Darleen E. Rudnick, Pet Nutritionist
Liver disease is a degenerative inflammatory disease that
results in the
hardening and scarring of liver cells. The liver becomes unable to
function properly due to the scarred tissue, which prevents the normal passage
of blood through the liver. The nutrients listed below can help
maintain proper liver function.
Vitamin B Complex
Vitamin B12
The B Vitamins are necessary for proper digestion, absorption of nutrients,
and the formation of red blood cells.
Folic Acid
Choline
Inositol
Primrose oil
To prevent an imbalance of fatty acids, found in the liver.
Garlic
Detoxifies the liver and bloodstream.
L-Arginine
L-cysteine
L-methionine
Helps to detoxify ammonia, a byproduct of protein digestion that can
accumulate when the liver is not functioning properly. Helps detoxify
harmful toxins.
L-carnitine
Helps prevent accumulation of fat in the liver.
Glutamine
A powerful antioxidant that protects against liver cancer.
Lecithin granules
A powerful fat emulsifier.
Betaine
Ox bile extract
Replaces the digestive enzymes normally produced by the gallbladder.
Raw liver extract
Prevents anemia and aids in building the liver.
Taurine
The most important antioxidant for health and stress from free radical
damage
Magnesium
To promote healing of tissue. Beneficial for the nervous system.
Vitamin C
An important antioxidant.
Vitamin D
Vitamin E
A potent antioxidant that aids circulation.
Coenzyme Q10
Zinc
Needed for the immune system and the healing process.
I would not recommend going out and buying a bottle of each, but I would
recommend finding 2 or 3 vitamins that contain all the above. I recommend
for liver disease Protec Body Guard and Comple-Zyme because they contain
all the ingredients above. I would also recommend Skin & Liver
Support. This product contains:
Milk Thistle Seed (which is a great liver detoxifier), yellow dock root,
fresh burdock root, echinacea, sarsaparillas root, and Oregon Grope Root(
aids in liver metabolism).

Other Recommendations:
Alfalfa helps to build a healthy digestive tract and is a good source of
vitamin K. It helps to prevent bleeding as a result of vitamin K
deficiency, which is common with liver disease.
Aloe Vera helps to cleanse and heal the digestive tract.
Increase the consumption of foods high in potassium such as bananas,
brewer's yeast, kelp, whole brown rice and wheat bran.
Do not feed cod liver oil.
Provide fresh vegetables and fruits in the diet. Include alfalfa sprouts
and green leafy vegetables.
Include legumes -- kidney beans and peas. These foods contain the amino
acid Arginine, which helps to detoxify ammonia, a byproduct of protein
digestion.
Diet is one of the most important factors in dealing with this disease. I
highly recommend a homemade diet. Here are come recipes to try.
Diet One
2 medium eggs
1/2 cup lean or organ meat
2 cups cooked barley or brown rice
daily supplements as recommended
2 tablespoons grated parsnip or other vegetable
1 tablespoon honey
Mix the first four ingredients as the main ration. Roll the parsnip and
honey into balls and feed as a treat.
Yield: about 2 1/2 cups
Diet Two
1/3 cup lean hamburger (cooked)
1/3 cup cooked kidney
1 3/4 cup cooked barley or brown rice
1 tablespoon nonfat powdered milk (or 1/3 cup skim milk)
1/4 cup chopped parsley or other vegetable
daily supplements as recommended.
Simply combine the ingredients and serve.
yield; about 3 cups
Cook meat. Cook rice until it is to a mushy consistency. Add rest
of
ingredients and serve.
Vegetables you can use are:
yellow squash
carrots, alfalfa sprouts
broccoli
asparagus
green beans
peas
NO ONIONS
Feed small meals throughout the day. The ideal schedule is breakfast,
lunch, dinner and snack. Smaller meals will digest more easily than one
big meal a day.
If you need further help, I now do consults. A consultation will include
a
personalized diet and holistic program suggestions, all custom-tailored to
your pet's personal needs. While I continue to provide and even add
educational articles on the website, these are just general in nature. I
therefore encourage you to tailor a program specifically for your pet's
needs. This is particularly imperative in pets with complicated health
issues, or if you've done a lot of outside reading and have conflicting
information.
This new service is easy to use! Simply email me at
darleen@purelypets.com
and give 3 convenient times for you to schedule the consultation Monday -
Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST. I will email you back, selecting one
of
those times. I will then email you a health questionnaire to be
filled
out and emailed back prior to the consultation. This will give a health
history of your pet and also pinpoint some problems or changes that need to
be made which will be discussed on the phone.
I am now offering my services at a nominal fee of $35.00 per consultation
(no time limit),
with a one time no charge follow-up. If you would like further information
on how to initiate a valuable private consultation, please email me at
darleen@purelypets.com
.
Feel free to contact me about your pet anytime.
