Kidney Disease -- Nutritional Healing

By Darleen E. Rudnick, Pet Nutritionist

Kidney Disease is becoming very common in older dogs and cats.
Whenever there is a problem with the kidneys or bladder it means something
is in the body that should not be there -- usually toxins.  The kidneys are
almost like a filter, it will filter freely for a long time clogging very
slowly.  If the kidneys are not cleaned out periodically, they eventually
clog causing urinary tract problems and eventually kidney failure.  The
solution is to clean the kidneys out so the filter can flow freely.  Once
the filter flows freely the body is able to function properly.

The most common symptom is that the pet drinks increasingly more water and
excretes increasingly more pale or colorless urine.  As the disease
progresses, the pet may have bouts of vomiting, constipation or
diarrhea.  When these latter signs appear, your pet may be struggling to
get along with only thirty percent kidney function.

Treating Kidney Disease Naturally

The program outlined below are general guidelines to follow.  Each pet is
an individual and has it's own particular needs.  Therefore I highly
recommend a consultation before beginning the program.  Purely Pets offers
consultations at no charge and at your convenience.

1.  Diet

Since diet is one of the most important factors in dealing with this
disease, I highly recommend a homemade diet. You must give your pet food
that is going to take the strain off the kidneys.  You have to help the
body produce as little waste as possible, so that the kidney is asked to do
the minimum of work to remove that waste.  The diet must be low in protein,
however, what protein the pet does get must be of very high quality.  Many
commercial pet foods and speciality diets for kidney disease use very low
quality protein.

Diet appears to be about 90% of the problem when dealing with kidney
dysfunction as most dry foods contain low quality ingredients contributing
to this disease.  A significant improvement can be seen when switching the
diet to a homemade, low protein, high quality protein diet.

It is extremely important to feed your pet several small meals a day
regardless of a health problem.  It is NOT healthy to feed your pet once a
day.  Keep in mind when you eat once a day you feel irritable, dizzy and
then you overeat.  Pets need to eat as we do -- breakfast, lunch, dinner
and a light snack before bedtime.  If every pet owner did this, we would
see a decline in health problems immediately.  I will outline the ideal
schedule, however, you need to work this out with your schedule and your
convenience.

7:00 a.m. or when you get up:  Homemade diet. (Very small meal)
11:00 a.m. Light snack:  Fruit (banana, watermelon or apple)
3:00 p.m  Light snack:  Vegetable (Cucumber, carrot)
7:00 p.m. Dinner:  Homemade diet (very small meal)
Before bed:  Light snack: Fruit or vegetable.

I am well aware that many pet owners do not have the time to cook meals for
their pet.  You should not feel guilty or feel that you will never get the
problem under control. Sirius Pet Foods located on the Purely Pets website
is a dry dog food that includes whole brown rice and other high quality
ingredients.  With the addition of Sirius and the supplements listed below
you will be able to get Kidney disease under control.

2.  Supplementation:

As I say in all my article, disease can not attack a clean body.  It is so
important to keep the body clean as this WILL prevent disease.  If the
kidneys are clean, the pet can not get kidney disease.  I hear on a daily
basis, "My pet is not sick so I don't need to do that."  If I can teach one
thing it is that, you need to treat the pet before you see any signs. Clean
the body before you see an ailment.  This applies to Cancer, Asthma,
Epilepsy and any other ailment your pet may be suffering from.

For the treatment or prevention of kidney disease, I recommend:

If you need further help, I now do consults.  A consultation will include a
personalized diet and holistic program suggestions, all custom-tailored to
your pet's personal needs. While I continue to provide and even add
educational articles on the website, these are just general in nature. I
therefore encourage you to tailor a program specifically for your pet's
needs. This is particularly imperative in pets with complicated health
issues, or if you've done a lot of outside reading and have conflicting
information.

This new service is easy to use!  Simply email me at darleen@purelypets.com
and give 3 convenient times for you to schedule the consultation Monday -
Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST.  I will email you back, selecting one of
those times.   I will then email you a health questionnaire to be filled
out and emailed back prior to the consultation.  This will give a health
history of your pet and also pinpoint some problems or changes that need to
be made which will be discussed on the phone.

I am now offering my services at a nominal fee of $35.00 per consultation
(no time limit),
with a one time no charge follow-up. If you would like further information
on how to initiate a valuable private consultation, please email me at
darleen@purelypets.com .

Feel free to contact me about your pet anytime.
